What Is a 23 Crossover (Null Modem) RS232 Cable?
Standard RS-232 serial cables use straight-through wiring — Pin 2 to Pin 2, Pin 3 to Pin 3. This works when connecting a DTE device (a PC) to a DCE device (a modem), because the modem’s RX pin is wired to the PC’s TX pin internally. However, when connecting two DTE devices (PC to PC, PC to PLC, PC to router serial console), both devices transmit on Pin 3 and receive on Pin 2 — creating a conflict if a straight-through cable is used. The 23 crossover solves this by crossing Pin 2 and Pin 3: one end’s TX (Pin 3) connects to the other end’s RX (Pin 2), and vice versa, with Pin 5 (GND) connecting straight through. This is the fundamental null modem wiring defined by the TIA/EIA RS-232 standard for DTE-to-DTE communication. Before purchasing, confirm your devices require 23 crossover wiring — if your devices require full crossover with hardware handshaking lines, a different cable is needed.
