The USB to RS485 RS422 adapter CP2102 DT-5019(2nd) from DTECH connects a USB 2.0 port to RS-485 and RS-422 serial networks through a screw terminal block, available in 0.5m and 1.5m lengths. The screw terminal end allows direct wire-in connection for RS-485 and RS-422 field wiring without requiring a DB9 adapter — making it well suited to panel cabinet installations, terminal strips and industrial control enclosures where individual conductors are terminated directly into the converter. The DT-5019(2nd) is built around a Silicon Labs CP2102 + SP485 dual chip architecture, supports data rates up to 3Mbps, connects up to 256 RS-485/RS-422 devices in point-to-multipoint configuration, and includes both multi-layer cable shielding and a ferrite magnetic ring filter for signal stability in electrically noisy environments.
USB to RS485 RS422 Adapter CP2102 – Silicon Labs Dual Chip and Auto Direction Control
The DT-5019(2nd) uses the CP2102 from Silicon Labs as its USB-to-UART bridge, paired with an SP485 RS-485/RS-422 transceiver on the serial side. Driver and product documentation for the CP2102 are maintained at the Silicon Labs CP2102 product page. An automatic I/O circuit controls RS-485 data direction without any handshake signals — no RTS, no DTR — and without jumper settings, making it compatible with existing serial communication software and interface hardware without reconfiguration. Automatic baud rate detection reads the connected device’s speed on connection; the adapter supports 300bps to 3,000,000bps (3Mbps) — a significantly wider range than standard RS-232 equipment — and zero-delay transceiver conversion ensures no latency is introduced during direction switching, which is critical for time-sensitive Modbus RTU polling, PLC ladder logic reads and SCADA data acquisition cycles.
Screw Terminal Block, 256 Devices, 1200m Distance
The RS-485/RS-422 end of the DT-5019(2nd) terminates with a screw terminal block rather than a DB9 connector, enabling direct connection of stripped wire conductors from field cables. RS-485 half-duplex wiring uses T/R+, T/R− and GND; RS-422 full-duplex adds RXD+ and RXD− for a 5-terminal connection. In point-to-multipoint mode the adapter supports up to 256 RS-485/RS-422 devices on a single bus — suitable for building-wide Modbus RTU sensor networks, energy management systems, access control panels and industrial process control loops. The maximum supported RS-485/RS-422 communication distance is 1200m, allowing a single DT-5019(2nd) to span large factory floors, multi-storey buildings or outdoor site runs from a PC or industrial computer. The USB host side operates within a maximum 5m run.
Multi-Layer Shielding, Ferrite Magnetic Ring and LED Indicators
The DT-5019(2nd) cable construction combines multi-layer shielding with a ferrite magnetic ring filter at the USB end — a dual-layer approach to electromagnetic interference suppression that addresses both conducted and radiated EMI from variable-speed drives, switching power supplies, relay banks and other industrial electrical equipment commonly located near RS-485 wiring runs. Three colour-coded LED indicators provide working status at a glance: the red Power LED confirms the adapter is enumerated; the green TXD LED flashes on transmission; the yellow RXD LED flashes on reception. These LEDs are practical for live bus diagnosis — confirming whether a communication problem is on the transmit path, receive path, or a USB enumeration issue — without requiring serial terminal software to be open.
The adapter installs as a virtual COM port on Windows 10, 8, 7, XP and Linux and is USB bus-powered with no external supply required. Typical applications include Modbus RTU field bus polling, PLC programming and monitoring, building management system (BMS) device commissioning, energy meter data acquisition, access control system serial buses, parking management system communication and industrial automation control loops.
